Das Internationale Theaterfestival (FITS 12.6.-21.6.20)

Sibiu, Hermanstadt, Rumänien, gehört zu den großen internationalen Festivals in Europa. Seit dem Jahr 2007, in welchem Sibiu zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas gehörte, nutze ich die Möglichkeit, dieses Ereignis zu beobachten. Des Öfteren hatte ich Gelegenheit, während meiner journalistischen Tätigkeit das größte Ereignis seiner Art in Rumänien persönlich zu besuchen.

Die internationale Welt des Theaters traf sich mit den nationalen Veranstaltungen und machte Sibiu zu einem Hotspot der Szene. Jeweils 10 Tage standen Veranstaltungen vom frühen Morgen bis Mitternacht in teils unkonventionellen Venues statt. Straßentheater, Avantgarde, Puppenspiel, Kammer- und Großveranstaltungen unterschiedlichster Provenienz erfreuten nicht nur einheimische Besucher, zahlreiche ausländische Gäste aus Europa und der Welt verwandelten die Region Siebenbürgen zu einem internationalen Treffpunkt.

Constantin Chiriac, Intendant des FITS und des Radu-Stanca-Theaters Hermannstadt (TNRS), holte die Großen der Szene nach Rumänien und gab der neuen, jungen Generation ein Podium.

Doch 2020 war alles anders. Die Welt befand sich im Lockdown, was die Kultur bis tief ins Innere traf.

Nun wurde ersatzweise ein Online-Festival aufgelegt, das auf Facebook, Youtube und der Homepage www.sibfest.ro während derselben Zeitspanne täglich zwölf Stunden lang Wiederholungssendungen von Vorstellungen aus aller Welt zeigte. Diese lobenswerte Idee eröffnete die Chance, das FITS in Erinnerung zu behalten. Doch erwies sich dies fast überall als ein marginaler Ersatz, gleich so als ob man im TV täglich einen alten Film mit bekannten Darstellern zum wiederholten Male anschauen konnte.

Nach bisherigen Untersuchungen sahen überall nur sehr Wenige die Produktionen an, die teilweise bis zu zwei Dekaden alt waren. Diese Erfahrungen musste das FITS leider auch mit anderen Festivals weltweit teilen. Rechtfertigten ein geringerer Personaleinsatz und beinahe kostenneutrale Aufwand die Mühe? Diese Diskussion wird allerorts geführt und steht im Gegensatz zur Absage bzw. einer zeitlichen Verschiebung.

Meine Meinung dazu ist eindeutig. Das FITS hat auch in dieser Krise einen guten Job gemacht. Chiriac und seine Mannschaft haben die Hürde genommen. Ich denke da an das Festival Motto von vor acht Jahren „Krisen-Kultur macht den Unterschied“. Das Festival überwand bislang diverse Krisen, besonders unter finanziellen Aspekten. Natürlich hat das Festival 2020 überlebt und wird wie bei vielen anderen als das Corona-Jahr in die Chronik eingehen.

Unter kulturtouristischem Aspekt ist dieses Großereignis für die Stadt Sibiu und auch für Rumänien Werbeträger und internationaler Botschafter für gute Qualität. Es bleibt die berechtigte Hoffnung auf hunderte vibrierende Kulturevents im kommenden Jahr, die die Stadt bis in die Nacht hinein mit einem Feuerwerk aus Theater, Tanz, Licht und Musik wieder erstrahlen lassen. FITS (12.6.-21.6.20), The International Theatre Festival Sibiu,

Hermanstadt, Romania, is one of the major international festivals in Europe. Since 2007, when Sibiu was a European Capital of Culture, I have taken the chance to observe this event and have often had the opportunity to personally visit the biggest event of its kind in Romania during my journalistic work.

The international world of theatre met with the national events and made Sibiu a hotspot of the scene. For 10 days, events from early morning to midnight were held in sometimes unconventional venues. Street theatre, avant-garde, puppetry, chamber theatre and big theatre shows of various provenances delighted not only local visitors, but numerous foreign guests from Europe and the world transformed the Transylvania region into an international meeting place.

Constantin Chiriac, director of FITS and the Radu-Stanca-Theater Hermannstadt (TNRS), brought the greats of the scene to Romania and gave the new, young generation a stage.

But in 2020, everything was different. The world was in lockdown, which hit the culture deep inside.

Now, as a substitute, an online festival had been launched, which showed on Facebook, Youtube and the homepage www.sibfest.ro during the same period of time every day for twelve hours repeat broadcasts of performances from all over the world. This laudable idea opened up the opportunity to remember the FITS. But this proved to be a marginal substitute, as if you could watch an old movie with well-known actors on TV every day.

According to previous research, very few people looked at the productions, some of which were up to two decades old. Unfortunately, the FITS had to share these experiences with other festivals worldwide. Did a lower staffing effort and almost cost-neutral effort justify the effort? This discussion is conducted everywhere and is contrary to the rejection or a postponement of time.

My opinion on this is clear. The FITS has done once again a good job during the crisis. Chiriac and his team have cleared the hurdle. I am thinking of the festival motto of eight years ago "Crisis culture makes the difference". The festival has so far overcome various crises, especially from a financial point of view. Of course, the festival survived in 2020 and, as with many others, will go down in the chronicle as the Corona Year.

From the point of view of cultural tourism, this major event is for the city of Sibiu and also for Romania advertising media and international ambassador for good Romanian quality. There remains the legitimate hope for hundreds of vibrating cultural events in the coming year, which will make the city shine again into the night with a fireworks display of theatre, dance, light and music. (Dieter Topp)
